I can believe it! When I was born again over 20 years ago my first bike was a Yamaha Diversion 900 (I wanted shaft drive) fitted with Dunlop K555 tyres. Judging by the appalling roadholding they appeared to be made of Bakelite. The confounded things were still substantially unworn after 14000 miles when I cracked and replaced them with Bridgestones! Life got a lot easier.
