Hand held GPS

Are there any Geocachers out there?
I am planning a trip to the Canadian Rockies and until now have always used Topo maps and compass for navigating. Having looked at the cost of the maps I'll require (there's a good few) I got to thinking a hand held GPS could be a viable alternative.
I've done much on-line research but there is only so much one can learn from the written word, even from well versed experts. I need to talk to someone experienced in the field (yes, pun intended) who can enlighten my darkness and enable me to put the theory into practice should I decide to go down this road, Ouch!
If anyone could offer help I'd be most obliged.
